
Club Olympia had several winners in Indiana Swimming’s 2020-21 Winter “Virtual” Distance and IM Challenge.
The annual “Virtual” meet is open to all swim clubs in the state, which compete by having their individual swimmers complete timed swims in the mile (1,650-yard freestyle), and 1,000 freestyle and 400 individual medley. Teams had from Dec. 11 through Jan. 10 to complete those timed events in sanctioned meets or during practice in their home pools, after which their club coaches submitted times to Indiana Swimming.
Club Olympia was top team for the state with 29 of its swimmers from ages 8 to 20 entering the competition and claiming first place in 28 of 65 events broken down by age and gender. Fishers Area Swimming Tigers (FAST) was second with winners in 15 events. Club Olympia also placed second in 13 events.
First-place finishers for Club Olympia girls in all three events for their age were Hope Westphal (14), Nalanie Cortez (15) and Erica Samuel (19). Maggie Johnson (16) won the 1,000 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle and Rachel Sabotin (18) took the 400 IM and 1,000 freestyle.
First place finishers for Club Olympia boys in all three events for their age were Joshua Pendleton (10), Brady Beyer (15) and Matt Stuckwisch (20). Tony Machavariani (8) and Mason Curry (18) each won the 400 IM and 1,000 freestyle, Shreyan Kulkarni (8) and Chad Kelly (17) each captured the 1,650 freestyle.
Second place finishers by age for Club Olympia were Lily Pendleton (8), Connelly Furnish (11), Ashley Freel (14), Maggie Johnson, (15), Olivia Morlok (18), Shreyan Kulkarni (8) Misha Machavariani (13), Chad Kelly (17), Dathan Wolf (17) and Mason Curry (18).

Squirt Flames go 4-0-1
Columbus Squirt Flames A beat Team Ohio 3-1, downed Northern Kentucky 3-1 and 7-0 and tied 3-3 and won 3-2 against Compuware AA. Brooks Larsh led the Flames with five goals and five assists. Carter Davis netted five goals and three assists, Aaron Warble and Henry Schloemer each recorded two goals and one assist, Carter Harris notched one goal and three assists, Robert Orgass had one goal and two assists, Ethan Neumann added one goal and one assist, Kai Bergman and Rowan Correll each scored one goal, Maddox Coy had 4 assists and Thomas King added one assist. Canyon Long was in net with a 91.03 save percentage.
Columbus Flames Bantams beat Evansville 6-3 and 6-0. Jack Warble led the team with five goals and two assists. Westin Davis scored two goals; Samuel McGhehey, John Warble and Noah Marsh all netted one goal and one assist, Hayden Johnson and Jayden Pagan each scored one goal, John Roberts had two assists and Kaitlyn Buickle, Blake Avery, Leif Nelson, Cole Vreeland, Bryce McDonald, Cam Edmondson and Callijah Kenney all added one assist. Jackson Wheatley and Zach Goggins each were in net one game.
Peewee Flames A won 8-1 and tied 2-2 against the Bloomington Blades. Keaton Russel led the team with three goals and one assist. Tyson Tyner netted two goals and one assist; Eduardo Aranda recorded one goal and two assists; Carson King, Sawyer Patterson and Will Jamerson all had one goal and one assist; Drew Weed scored 1 goal; River Degner had two assists and Ryan McGhehey, Kaitlyn Netser and Tsukasa Udo all had one assist. Lane Barringer was in net.
Peewee Flames B fell to South Indy Sharks 5-0 and 6-4. Ryan McGhehey netted two goals and one assist, Ashton Nguyen recorded one goal and one assist, Ayden Richardson scored one goal, Hudson Beckom had two assists and Zane Lynch added one assist. Beckom and Gabe Marsh were eat in net 1 games.
Squirt Flames B lost to Louisville Ice Cardinals 5-1 and 3-2. Bentley Hampton, Cooper Ross and Logan Barringer all scored one goal; and Nolan Sparkman and Preston Bell each had an assist. Cayden Long was in net one game with and 80.0 save percentage, and Knox Coen was in net one games with a 81.25 save percentage.
Columbus Flames Mites participated in a jamboree in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Mite A team went 2-2 to finish in second place. The Mite B team went 4-0 to win the championship.
Columbus Icemen fell to South Stars Red 4-3 and beat Evansville 3-1. John Ferguson led the Icemen with three goals and one assist. Ethan Kuniewicz netted one goal and two assists; Joe Neal and Andrew Clark each scored one goal and Brayson Bennett, Alex Clark and Logan Morris all had one assist. Cam Stattenfield and Jake McMullen each were in net one game.
BROOMBALL
Hansons stay unbeaten
Hansons slipped past The Steagles 4-2 in a battle for first place in the Columbus Broomball League. Ryan Ingalls netted two goals, and Erik Spilling and Cindy Mason each added one for Hansons (9-0-2). Kyle Roshak and Ben Eckhart scored for Steagles (8-2-1).
CCA beat Toyota Tsunamis 7-1. Dave Dickinson netted three goals, and Scott Herron and Max Warr each added two for CCA (7-4). Greg McNealy had the goal for Tsunamis (1-9-1).
Jennings County BC (2-8-1) edged Our Name Is Earl 5-4 behind four goals from Darien Castetter and one from Kyle Hinterman. Richard Gonzalez scored three goals, and Darren Eckerly added one for Earl (1-9-1).
