COLUMBUS, Ind. — Three teams will complete their design builds Saturday at FairOaks Mall as part of the annual Canstruction creative fundraiser for local food banks at Love Chapel, Salvation Army and Community Center of Hope.
The goal is to raise $21,000 from online votes at uwbarthco.org/canstruction-voting and 21,000 donated cans for onsite voting on favorite structures, according to organizers. The teams are Sunrise Rotary, Hawcreek Hauling and Starving Artists.
CANstruction features teams building engineering masterpieces of various scenes or structures using canned goods. All canned goods are then donated to the food banks.
Organizers with the United Way of Bartholomew County say the event is more important than ever as each food pantry is seeing increased need due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year’s event set a record of 61,218 cans either used for the teams’ creations or those donated by residents by voting.
