Donald E. Vogel, 73, of Columbus, passed from this life at 8:03 a.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

Mr. Vogel was born August 7, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Kurt and Virginia Baltus Vogel.

He married Barbara J. Walton September 30, 1996.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Don served as President of Vogel Brothers Corp until 2012. Upon his retirement he joined his wife, Barbara serving as COO of Anvil USA, Inc.

He held multiple patents in the shear manufacturing industry and accumulated multiple trademarks in the shear industry after his retirement. During this time, Don invented the InstALIGN machine and was working on other machines to increase shear sharpening production throughout the sharpening industry.

After 50 years in shear manufacturing, Don’s contribution to the manufacturing of shears will live on in the men and women who have known him and the shears they continue to service and use.

Survivors include his wife; step-children, Nathan (Mariel) Lewis of Carmel, Indiana and Jacinda (Joe) Maudlin of Greenville, Indiana; 4 grandchildren and a brother, David S. Vogel of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. Military honors will be presented by the Indiana Army National Guard Ceremonial Unit and the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Family and friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to time of service at the funeral home.

In keeping with the families wishes, cremation will take place following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mayo Clinic Foundation or the Neutropenia Foundation.

Due to pandemic restrictions, we are limited to 50 people in the funeral home.

We do ask that visitors follow the social distancing guidelines once inside the funeral home and masks are required.
