Columbus firefighters called to dryer fire at laundromat

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus firefighters were sent to Speedy Clean Laundromat, 282 N. Gladstone Ave., on a report of a dryer fire.

Before they arrived, Columbus police were at the scene and used a dry chemical fire extinguisher on the dryer to extinguish the fire in the dryer, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

As firefighters arrived on the scene, a bystander at the laundromat had removed the smoldering clothing outside of the building, which was still filled with smoke, Wilson said.

Firefighters applied water to the smoldering clothing to ensure the fire was fully out and set up ventilation fans to aid in removing the smoke from the business. Inside the building  firefighters inspected the damaged unit and surrounding units to confirm the interior fire was out. Damages caused by the fire are estimated at $15,000. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Investigators have listed the cause of the fire as accidental.
