Jennings County High School senior Kyla Franklin was recently awarded the Outstanding Lieutenant Governor award by the Indiana Key Club.

Key Club is the world’s largest high school service organization, with leadership opportunities at the school, state, and international levels. Key Club is sponsored by Kiwanis clubs, such as the one in North Vernon.

Franklin was responsible for helping Key Clubs in the Heartland Division, which include Franklin Community, Seymour, Columbus East, Columbus North, and Hauser high schools, serve their homes, schools, and communities.

She created committees made up of members from the clubs at the five other schools to share ideas and collaborate on projects such as volunteering with the FLASH program in Jennings County and building a picnic area at Camp Atterbury.

Franklin also led the clubs in raising over $1,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research.

“Serving in this position has been one of the greatest honors I have experienced,” Franklin said. “I would like to thank Mr. Eric Kelley and Mrs. Megan Buchanan for all their support this year.”

There has been a Key Club at JCHS since 1980, with Kendall Wildey serving as the first president. There are 5,000 members in the state of Indiana and JCHS has 30 members.

On average, JCHS raises $1,500 per year for local, state and international groups, and members average around 30 service hours devoted to the community.

“I encourage underclassmen to join Key Club,” Franklin said. “It changed me from the quiet and shy person that I was freshman year to the confident servant leader that I am today. “The friendships and memories that you make are some of the best.”
