COLUMBUS, INDIANA
Debra L. Whitis, 67, of Elizabethtown, passed away March 6, 2021. She was born August 24, 1953 in Columbus to the late Frank and Dorothy Brooks Burton. She married Lonnie Whitis on April 15, 1972 in Hope, Indiana, and he survives.
She was a homemaker while her children were growing up, then she went to work for Bartholomew County Consolidated School Corporation. She quickly worked her way up to be the Building Manager at Columbus East High School. In all, she worked for the school for 17 years, retiring in 2011.
Other survivors include her sons, Jeff (Kelly) Whitis, of Columbus and Daniel Whitis, of Elizabethtown; daughters, Jenny Mings, of Taylorsville, and Connie (Jeff) Wilson, of Ogilville; sister Nancy (Keith) Grisby, of Anderson, MO; 11 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren, with a great grandchild on the way. She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Lonnie Whitis, Jr. and Brother Larry Burton.
A funeral service will be conducted by Pastor John Lucas at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 12, 2021, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ohio Chapel Cemetery in Ogilville.
Memorial gifts have been suggested to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
