Club Olympia nets top-20 finish at Senior State

Eight Club Olympia Swim Team athletes scored 200 points to place 19th out of more than 70 club teams in last weekend’s Indiana Senior State Championships.

The eight Club Olympia swimmers had 17 personal-best times in 23 qualified individual events and finished in the top 25 in the three boys relay events in which they competed.

Top individual performances were turned in by Brady Beyer and Ashley Freel. Beyer set personal-best times in all six of his individual events, scoring five top-10 finishes. He placed third in the 400 individual medley, sixth in the 200 breaststroke and 1,650 freestyle — where he achieved a Junior National Open Water qualifying time — seventh in the 1,000 freestyle and 10th in the 200 IM.

Freel, in her first Senior State Championship swimming individual events, finished eithth in the 1,000 freestyle, 10th in both the 200 freestyle and 400 IM 17th in the 200 butterfly and had top-25 finishes in both the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Freel also set personal-best times in all six of her events.

Mason Curry and Hope Westphal also both qualified for and swam two individual events in their first Senior State Championship meet. Maggie Johnson qualified for and competed in six events, including an 18th-place finish to score points for the team in the 1,000 freestyle. Matt Stuckwisch qualified for and competed in two events. All achieved personal-best times during the weekend.

The Club Olympia relay teams had significant time drops to move into scoring position in two of their three events, just missing a top-24 finish to score in the third relay. The 200 medley and 400 medley relays consisting of Dathan Wolf, Beyer, Curry and Stuckwisch placed 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Beyer, Curry, Cole Ehara and Stuckwisch finished 25th in the 800 freestyle relay.

Donner competes in Divisonal meet

Several Donner Swim Club athletes competed in the Southeast Indiana Divisional Championship swim meet at Franklin Community High School.

For the 15-and-over girls, Donner was led by Ellie Proffitt, who won the 100 butterfly and placed third in 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 IM and dropped nine seconds from her lifetime best time to finish fourth in the 500 freestyle.

Paige Sherlock knocked almost two minutes off her best time to win the 15-and-over 1,650 freestye and placed second in the 500 freestyle, fourth in the 200 freestyle and ninth in the 200 breaststroke. Paige Maddox finished second in the 1,650 freestyle, seventh in the 500 freestyle, 10th in the 200 backstroke and 13th in the 200 freestyle.

Brooke Meek finished fifth in the 1,650 freestyle, 11th in the 100 freestyle and 15th in the 500 freestyle. Lauren Brault dropped almost 30 seconds from her lifetime best to finish sixth in the 1650 freestyle and took eighth in the 400 IM and 14th in the 500 freestyle.

Karissa Miller placed ninth in the 100 backstroke, 10th in the 100 freestyle, 15th in the 100 butterfly and 16th in the 50 freestyle. Josie Havenaar and Karissa Bevis finished 15th and 16th in the 100 backstroke.

Bevis anchored the fifth-place 200 medley relay team, which also included Miller, Sherlock and Proffitt. Miller, Maddox, Havenaar and Meek placed seventh in the 200 freestyle relay.

For the 15-and-over Donner boys, Carlos Fabian dropped nearly 16 seconds to finish fourth in the 200 freestyle. He also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly, seventh in the 100 backstroke, eighth in the 400 IM and 10th in the 200 IM. Brock Smith placed fourth in the 200 butterfly, 13th in the 200 breaststroke, 14th in the 400 IM and joined Fabian, Braden Seegers and Jude Abdallah on the ninth-place 200 freestyle relay team.

Matthew Goble finished 12th in the 400 IM, 14th in the 100 backstroke and 15th in the 100 butterfly. Abdallah placed 18th in the 100 breaststroke, and Seegers was 18 th in the 500 freestyle.

For the 14-and-under boys, Isaac Proffitt placed third in the 50 freestyle; fourth in the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke; sixth in 500 freestyle and eighth in 200 IM. Conner Hoffman finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke and teamed with Proffitt, Nicolas Bowers and Andrew Brown to take sixth in the 200 medley relay and seventh in the 200 freestylerelay.

In the 14-and-under girls division, Ainsley Sherlock placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke and 17th in the 500 freestyle, while Abby Henderson placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke.

For the 12-and-under girls, Abby Proffitt finished 11th in the 500 freestyle, 14th in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle and 15th in the 100 freestyle. Kanav Mehta took 15th in the 100 backstroke and teamed with Proffitt, Nitya Garg and Layla McNear to capture ninth in the 200 freestyle relay. Mehta, Cora Tregoning, Garg and Proffitt were 10th in the 200 medley relay.

In the 12-and-under boys division, Aarush Mahato placed  third in the 50 butterfly, fourth in the 100 butterly and fifth in the 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. Mahato teamed with Dereck Prieto Marina, Levi Bense and Krish Paliwal to take fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Rajvi Sapkal finished ninth in the 10-and-under girls 200 freestyle and 14th in the 50 freestyle.

Donner Swim Club will be returning to the water for Long Course starting in April and is hoping to host its annual Jaime Miller Invitational swim meet at the Donner Aquatic Center in early June. HOCKEY

Flames Peewee takes second

Columbus Flames Peewee B competed in the Crossfire Hurricane Tournament in Oxford, Ohio, last weekend.

The Peewees beat Compuware 6-1 and Miami Junior Redhawks 6-0 and fell to the Vikings 4-2. In the championship game, the Peewees played the Vikings again and lost 5-3 to finish their season with a second-place finish.

Ashton Nguyen led the team with five goals and had one assist, and Ryan McGhehey netted three goals and two assists to earn MVP honors. Carter Davis scored three goals, Ayden Richardson recorded two goals and two assists, Aaron Warble had one goal and three assists, Griffin Mudd added one goal and two assists, Ethan Neumann posted one goal and one assist, Lillian Grunow scored one goal, Bryson Moore had 2 assists and Kai Bergmann and Carter Kareus each added one assist. Hudson Beckom and Gabe Marsh split time in net.

Mayhem third in Lucky Cup

The Columbus Mayhem finished third in the Lucky Cup Girls Hockey Tournament last weekend at Hamilton Community Center and Ice Arena.

The Mayhem will host Girls Hockey Drop-Ins for all ages from 5:45-6:45 p.m. May 10, 17 and 24 Cost is $10 per session. Beginning hockey experience is required.
