Panthers sweep Jets
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County opened the track and field season with a sweep of Hauser. The Panthers won the boys meet 113-19 and the girls meet 104-28.
Zane Ortlieb won the shot put (38 feet, 8 inches) and discus (118-0), Branden Braun took the 100 meters (12.30 seconds) and 300 hurdles (48.83) and Gavin Hendrix captured the 1,600 (4:46.55) and 800 (2:13.19) to lead the Jennings boys. Other winners for the Panthers were Caleb Grills in the pole vault (8-0), Skyler Lewis in the high jump (5-4), Lane Elsner in the 400 (52.44), Bryce Barnes in the 200 (25.67) and Brenden Baker in the 3,200 (10:49.21). Jennings swept the 4×800 (9:06.00), 4×100 (50.00) and 4×400 (3:51.57) relays.
Hauser’s Aleck Lopez won the long jump (18-7 1/2), and Forest Steele took the 100 hurdles (18.00).
Rachel Manning was a triple winner for the Panther girls, taking the pole vault (5-6), 100 (14.43) and 200 (30.94). Kristen Ponder took the long jump (13-1 1/4) and 400 (1:15.07), Kenna Maschino captured the shot (31-8) and discus (106-6) and Liz Wahlman won the 1,600 (6:04.00) and 3,200 (13:37.89). Rilee Hicks took the high jump (4-6), and Jennings won the 4×100 (58.18) and 4×400 (5:10.10) relays.
Winners for the Jets were Carly Beeker in the 100 hurdles (19.74), Grace Hattabaugh in the 300 hurdles (54.92), Marnie Schwartzkopf in the 800 (2:44.82). Hauser also took the 4×800 relay (14:43.00).
SOFTBALL
Jets fall to Braves
HOPE — Brownstown Central jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and went on to hand Hauser its first loss of the season, an 11-6 defeat.
Zoee Nading went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Jets (2-1).
Trinity tops South Decatur
SEYMOUR — Kamzi Gross threw a four-hitter and had a double and a home run to lead Trinity Lutheran to a 10-0 six-inning win against South Decatur.
Lauryn Pate went 2 for 3 with a double for South Decatur, which was playing its season opener. Trinity improved to 2-0.
BASEBALL
Panthers blank Eagles
NORTH VERNON — Jacob Vogel threw a one-hit shutout to lead Jennings County to a 4-0 season-opening win against Austin.
Ian Swayer went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple for the Panthers. Keegan Manowitz went 2 for 4.
Owls nip Cougars
SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran matched Seymour with six hits, but the Owls pushed across a run in the top of the seventh to pull out a 3-2 victory.
Jack Marksberry struck out 12 for the Cougars (1-1).
