Smith’s throw is best in nation

Tucker Smith

Tucker Smith’s 65-foot, 5-inch heave in the shot put in Tuesday night’s season opener at Bloomington South is the best mark in the nation this season.

The Columbus North junior shattered his own school record that he set in 2019. He placed second in the state finals that year.

Smith’s 65-5 throw is two inches farther than Bryce Foster of Taylor, Texas, who threw 65-3 in a district meet on Tuesday.

The Bull Dogs are scheduled to host the North Invitational on Saturday, and they’re hoping for a little luck from the weather to continue its streak of having the meet every other year.

The meet was canceled because of rain or cold weather in 2016 and 2018 and because of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. The local forecast is calling for 90 percent chance of rain on Saturday.

Eleven boys teams and 10 girls teams from around the state are scheduled to compete. The North, Columbus East and Brown County boys and girls will be joined by teams from Bloomington North, Center Grove, New Albany, Whiteland, Floyd Central, Tipton and Terre Haute South. Kokomo will be sending only its boys team.

Action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Bowlers net top-10s

Columbus North bowlers came away with a pair of top-10 finishes in the Indiana High School Bowling State Finals in Fort Wayne.

Freshman Lexie Jones finished third in the girls division and was named to the All-Tournament team. Senior Thomas McCarrick took 10th in the boys division and was selected All-State honorable mention.

McCarrick and fellow senior Matt Watson were named to the Academic All-State team.

Teams to compete at Floyd

The Columbus North and Columbus East golfers also will get a chance to see each other on Saturday when they compete in the Floyd Central Invitational.

The Bull Dogs are ranked No. 6 in the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association poll. No. 3 Center Grove and No. 8 and host Floyd Central also are among the entrants.

The tournament will have a 2 p.m. shotgun start at Valley View Golf Club in Floyds Knobs.

Locals invited to Top 60

Two area seniors who led their teams to conference titles this season have been invited to participate in Sunday’s Top 60 Workout.

Columbus North’s Blake Barker and South Decatur’s Lane Lauderbaugh are among those who have been selected for the workout, which will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Marian University.

Both sessions are open to the public. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
