Taylor Road project to resume

Residents who live near, or travel Taylor Road, can expect to see road closings beginning now through October as the project resumes.

The Columbus engineering department announced the section of Taylor Road from 25th Street to 31st Street will be closed on or after April 21, as Milestone Contractors begin work on that phase of the project.

City Engineer and Executive Director of Public Works Dave Hayward said that traffic could go east over to Fairlawn Drive, or west to Marr Road, though these are not official detours.

“The hopeful estimate of time is that they’ll complete their work in October of this year. The less optimistic version is it might carry over until next spring to finish up," Hayward said of the expected completion for the project.

The schedule could be affected by potential scarcity of certain materials, as well as weather conditions.

“The weather over the winter was just a little bit colder and not as suitable, this year, for continuing to work," he said. "… Last winter, we had a lot of work that just carried over through the winter months because it was much more mild. But this year, that wasn’t able to happen.”

Milestone was not able to complete the project’s previous phase, 31st Street to Rocky Ford Road, before shutting down for the winter because of the weather, he said. The company is finishing that work over the next couple of weeks and will then shift focus to the south end of Taylor Road.

The Taylor Road work includes making the street more "neighborhood-friendly and pedestrian-friendly," curb and gutter on both sides, new pavement, a side path on the west side of the street, a sidewalk on the east side and a mini roundabout at 31st and Taylor.

Motorists should remember to be cautious around construction areas and watch out for workers, he said.
