COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus native and former vice president Mike Pence announced in a press release he had a pacemaker implanted this week.

“I am grateful for the swift professionalism and care of the outstanding doctors, nurses and staff at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute,” Pence said in a statement.

The statement said Pence had experienced symptoms associated with a slow heart rate and had the surgery at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia.

The surgery was described as routine and a return to regular activities is expected in a few days, according to the statement.
