TERRE HAUTE — A first-generation college student from Columbus will be the undergraduate student speaker at Indiana State University’s spring commencement in May.

Karen Torres, who is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communication with a dual concentration in public relations and media studies, will be the speaker. She served as the Student Government Association’s director of external relations, executive producer of Sycamore Video, the television news and film branch of ISU Student Media, as a student ambassador for University Marketing and as a residential assistant.

She received the Ron and Sandra Culp Student Leadership Scholarship, awarded to communication majors who demonstrate leadership in student media.
