A few local basketball standouts put together with big performances in Sunday’s Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association East-West All-Star Games at Barr-Reeve.
South Decatur’s Lane Lauderbaugh was named MVP of the boys game after scoring 25 points to lead the East team to a 131-128 double-overtime win over the West. Columbus North’s Blake Barker added 13 points for the East.
In the girls game, Trinity Lutheran’s Sydney Jaynes led the East with 23 points in a 95-82 loss to the West.
Meanwhile, Jennings County’s Addyson Kent, who played for the East, was one of four girls recipients of a $500 Carolyn Pieper Scholarship Award.
Two North girls win scholarships
Two Columbus North seniors have won scholarships from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Madison White is one of 16 winners of a Marion Crawley Award. The Crawley Award is based on achievement in basketball, achievement in academics, participation in extracurricular activities and service to one’s school and community.
Alana Cook is the state’s lone recipient of the Junior Mannies Award. The Mannies Scholarships are presented to students who have a physical handicap but have contributed to their respective school’s athletic program.
Bergman’s jump is tops in state
Columbus East senior Crase Bergman’s school-record leap of 23 feet, 8 1/2 inches in Tuesday’s Seymour Invitational is the top long jump in the state this season.
Bergman joins two Columbus North juniors with state-bests this season. Tucker Smith is tops in the shot put (68-5 3/4), and Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff is first in the 800 meters (1 minute, 52.seconds) and second in the 1,600 (4:07.94).
On the girls side, North has the state’s best time in the 4×800 relay (9:35.34). Senior Emily Herndon ranks second in the shot (41-6).
Barker named North boys basketball MVP
Blake Barker has been named MVP of the Columbus North boys basketball team.
Cooper Horn won the Bull Dog Award, Sam King won the McDonald Mental Attitude Award and Jakub Trusina won the Scholar Athlete Award.
Max Wilson and Diing Diing won the John Carmichael Award, and Reese Harmon won the Behrman Big Dog Award. Those two awards come with a $500 scholarship.
East girls soccer holding callout
The Columbus East girls soccer team will have a callout meeting at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the school’s cafeteria.
All players who are interested in playing soccer at Columbus East HS next year and their parents are encouraged to attend. The coaching staff will provide information regarding the program, expectations and the preseason schedule.

Baseball, softball pairings are Sunday
The baseball and softball tournament pairings will take place on Sunday. Softball will begin at 6 p.m., followed by baseball at 7 p.m.
