Jets shock Spartans

HOPE — Koby Johnson came within one out of a no-hitter Thursday, and Hauser pulled off a 3-1 Mid-Hoosier Conference upset of Class A No. 2 Southwestern (Shelby).

Johnson pitched 6 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball before Christian DeArmitt’s double with two out in the bottom of the seventh plated Jordan Jones, who had walked. Johnson finished with six strikeouts and two walks in the one-hitter.

The Jets (9-5, 6-1) scored single runs in the third, sixth and seventh and managed three hits. Frankie Poole went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Hauser’s win avenges an 11-3 defeat a day earlier on the same field. Thursday’s game was moved from Southwestern to Hauser because of wetness on the Spartans’ diamond.

BOYS GOLF

Jets nip Yellow Jackets

Hauser pulled out a 195-198 win against Morristown at Otter Creek.

Chase Martoccia led the Jets with a 44, while Caleb Wallace carded a 47 and Justice Gilliland, Brock Thalls and Daniel Taylor all shot 52. Jesse Bragg added a 59, and Ben Johnson had a 62.

Lancers fall to GCA

INDIANAPOLIS — Edinburgh fell to Greenwood Christian Academy 170-217 at Smock.

Max Blandford led the Lancers with a 47. Trevor Moon carded a 50, Mason Calhoun added a 59, Cash Cunningham shot 61, Devyn Milburn had a 64 and Keegan Smith finished with a 66.

Eagles net season-best

EDINBURGH — Brown County posted its best score of the season, but fell to Southwestern (Shelby) 217-224 at Timbergate.

Cooper VanNess won medalist honors with a 42 to lead the Eagles. Jordan Burnett and Clay Austin each shot 60, Bradley Arndt added a 62 and Dylan Taylor had a 69.

GIRLS TENNIS

Woodmen edge East

GREENWOOD — Columbus East won a pair of singles matches, but Greenwood pulled out a 3-2 victory.

Cathrine Millwood beat Meri Yuset 3-6, 6-2, (10-5) at No. 2 singles, and Katie Hong topped Maggie Boyce 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (2-9).

East’s Ayano Nomura fell to Marissa Linville 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Shruthika Kumar and Monica Burton lost to Sophia Davidson and Brooklyn Hudson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Cassidy Schnur and Olivia Clark fell to Ashlee Walton and Ava Stein 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Red Devils top Panthers

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jennings County won the No. 1 singles match, but Jeffersonville took the other four to claim a 4-1 victory.

Reagan Brown beat Addie Scott 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Panthers (9-3).

Jennings’ Tatum Brown fell to Lydie Kittrell 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Carmen Kopitzke lost to Alexis Evans 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Sydney Carson and Liz Ertel fell to Loran Halstead and Evelyn Minton 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Cassidy Mull and Lucy Brown lost to Jocelyn Lopez and Tiara Jones 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Eagles blank Patriots

SPENCER — Brown County dropped only 12 games in the five matches in a 5-0 Western Indiana Confernece win at Owen Valley.

Julia Williams beat Haley Frank 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Anna Tipton downed Elizabeth Johnson 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Anna Stogsdill topped Kristi Arnold 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Eagles (5-2, 4-0).

Brown County’s Londyn Koester and Katie Tipton blanked Grace Coryea and Bre Davis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Mattie Satter and Julia Burt defeated Alex Sartelle and Mady Dill 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Panthers down Bulldogs

NORTH VERNON — Tori Lee went 4 for 4 with a two home runs, a triple, a double and four RBIs to lead Jennings County to a 9-1 Hoosier Hills Conference win against New Albany.

Averi Zamora went 3 for 4 with a double, and Delaynee McCreary went 2 for 4 with two home runs and two RBIs. Skylar Weber went 2 for 4 with a double, and Shelby Wilson went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Wilson and Ashley Meade combined on a five-hitter.

TRACK AND FIELD

Jet boys take third

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Hauser’s boys finished third, and the Jet girls were fifth in the Eastern Hancock Invitational.

Eastern Hancock won the boys meet with 166 2/5 points to 121 for Indianapolis Herron and 64 4/5 for Hauser. Blue River Valley won the girls meet with 119 points, and the Jets scored 21.

Hauser’s Aleck Lopez won the boys long jump (17 feet, 4 inches) and finished third in the 400 meters (54.63 seconds) and fourth in the 100 (12.02). Forest Steele took second in the 110 hurdles (18.18).

Marnie Schwartzkopf led the Jet girls with a second-place finish in the 800 (2:40.03).

Panther throwers win

SHELBYVILLE — Kenna Maschino won the shot put (34-9 3/4) and discus (108-4) to lead the Jennings County girls to an eighth-place finish in the Shelbyville Invitational.

The Panthers’ Zane Ortlieb won the boys shot (43-10) and finished second in the discus (130-5). Gavin Hendrix was second in the 800 (2:05.71).

The Jennings boys finished fifth as a team with 54 points in a meet won by Mooresville won with 139. The Panther girls took eighth with 26 points in a meet won by Cathedral with 107.
