COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested a passenger after a report of an attempted vehicle theft at the I-65 northbound rest park at 9:52 p.m. Monday.
Deputies located the vehicle in question which had been crashed into a curb. The driver and a passenger, identified as Cade Bean, 21, Avilla, had exited the vehicle – leaving the car keys inside. As they exited the facility, they reported seeing a male subject driving away in their vehicle. After the alleged suspect crashed the vehicle, he fled on foot taking personal items, also left inside the vehicle, with him.

Through the course of the investigation, deputies found that Bean had an active out-of-county felony warrant. It was also discovered that Bean had two “no contact orders” protecting him and the driver from one another, deputies said.
Bean was remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of invasion of privacy and the felony warrant.
He remains in the Bartholomew County Jail without bond.
The investigation for vehicle theft is ongoing. Deputies ask if anyone has any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, regarding this incident, to please contact the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office at: 812-379-1650 or call BCSO’s Tip Line: 812-379-1712.
Sheriff Matt Myers reminded motorists to always lock your car when leaving it, take valuables with you when you leave your car and refrain from leaving the keys inside the vehicle.
“This type of incident can happen anywhere: apartment complexes, churches, restaurants, convenience stores, even in your own driveway,” Myers said.
