Tucker Smith // Columbus North junior track athlete
Smith set an all-time state record of 69 feet, 4 1/2 inches in winning the shot put at Friday’s Conference Indiana meet. He also won the discus with a throw of 167-9 to lead the Bull Dogs to a runner-up team finish.
His performance last week: “I feel good. It felt great.”
Do you do anything special to prepare? “I eat so much Chef Boyardee. I’ll go and buy 10 things of Spaghetti O’s and spaghetti and meatballs and ravioli. It’s protein, carbohydrates, everything you need.”

Emily Herndon // Columbus North senior track athlete
Herndon won the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 8 inches, and the discus at 120-11 to help lead the Bull Dogs to a runner-up team finish in Friday’s Conference Indiana meet.
Her performance last week: “I was really happy with shot. I wasn’t too happy with discus. I thought I could have thrown better. But looking back on it now, I was happy with my performance.”
Do you do anything special to prepare? “Every time before a meet, I get Tropical Smoothie.”

Favorite food: “Brownies”
Favorite class: “Math”
Favorite sports team: “Mississippi State. My cousin played there.”

Role model: “My dad (Fernando Herndon)”
Best advice: “Never take anything for granted because you don’t have much time left. To be the best, you have to believe you’re the best.”
Athletics goal: “To beat the school record (in the shot).”
If you could travel anywhere: “Italy, just because of how nice it is and to see all the historical places.”
