Olympians snap skid
MADISON — Columbus East snapped a 12-game losing streak and picked up its first Hoosier Hills Conference win of the season Wednesday with an 11-1 victory at Madison.
Kaylee Smith took a shutout into the seventh inning for the Olympians (3-14, 1-4). She finished with a four-hitter and eight strikeouts.
Kenzie Foster went 2 for 3 with a home run to lead East at the plate. Kaitlin Brummett went 2 for 3, and Kerigan Greathouse and Julia Sitterding each went 2 for 5 with two RBIs.
Panthers down Owls
NORTH VERNON — Tori Lee went 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead Jennings County to an 11-5 HHC win against Seymour.
Skylar Weber went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs for the Panthers (8-11, 4-1). Shelby Wilson had a home run and two RBIs, and Delaynee McCreary had a home run and two RBIs.
BOYS GOLF
North takes second
FRANKLIN — No. 6 Columbus North finished second in a tri match at Hillview. No. 2 Center Grove won with a 138 to 151 for the Bull Dogs and 159 for host Franklin.
Luke VanDeventer and Jacob Niedbalski each shot 37 to lead North. Luke Schneider carded a 38, Willy Davis added a 39 and Tyler Wilks had a 43.
BASEBALL
Jets fall to Trojans
HOPE — Class A No. 9 Hauser led 1-0 after one inning and was tied 1-1 after two, but East Central scored five in the third and 10 in the fourth on its way to a 19-2, five-inning victory.
The Jets (11-6) were limited to three hits.
Panthers blank Tigers
NORTH VERNON — Jacob Vogel and Austin Martin combined on a three-hit shutout to lead Jennings County to a 4-0 win against Lawrenceburg.
Logan McIntosh went 2 for 4 for the Panthers (8-5).
Spartans stop Lancers
SHELBYVILLE — Edinburgh trailed only 5-2 after 3 1/2 innings, but Class A No. 5 Southwestern (Shelby) scored nine times in the bottom of the fourth to pull away for a 14-2, five-inning Mid-Hoosier Conference win.
The Lancers (0-12, 0-8) were limited to three hits.
GIRLS TENNIS
Trojans top Olympians
Columbus East pulled out a three-set win at No. 3 singles, but East Central took the other four matches in a 4-1 decision.
Katie Hong beat Riley Bambergert 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (2-10).
East’s Ayano Nomura fell to Heidi Kane 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Cathrine Millwood lost to Payton Pies 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Cassidy Schnur and Shruthika Kumar fell to Michelle Batta and Elizabeth Kirchgessner 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Monica Burton and Katey Rieckers lost to Lacey Kelly and Avery Daniels 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Tiger Cubs edge Eagles
GREENCASTLE — Brown County’s Julia Williams had to injury default at No. 1 singles, and that allowed Greencastle to post a 3-2 Western Indiana Conference victory.
Anna Stogsdill beat Ally Schimpf 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Eagles (6-6, 4-2). Londyn Koester and Katie Tipton topped Faith Hartman and Liberty Amis 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Brown County’s Anna Tipton fell to Madele Landry 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Mattie Satter and Abi Bowman lost to Caroline Gooch and Sophie Riggle 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Tigers sweep Lancers
FAIRLAND — Triton Central won all five matches in straight sets in a 5-0 win against Edinburgh.
Annelise Lollar fell to Brooklyn Schiffli 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Bethany Burton lost to Julia Sanders 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Jessica Walsh fell to Lelia Chougule 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for the Lancers (2-8).
Edinburgh’s Alyssa Funkhouser and Peyton Bryant lost to Emma Hutchinson and Kelsey McGuire 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Zoey Sida and Gracie Myers fell to Alyssa Wheatley and Sarah Williams 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
TRACK AND FIELD
Panthers, Cubs split
MADISON — Jennings County split a dual meet at Madison on Tuesday, winning the boys contest 63-23 and dropping the girls meet 55-26. Field events were not contested because of wetness.
Winners for the Panther boys included Will Barnes in the 110-meter hurdles (19.4 seconds), Branden Braun in the 100 (12.3), Brenden Baker in the 1,600 (4:53.8), Cole Marksberry in the 300 hurdles (45.3), Gavin Hendrix in the 800 (2:10.6) and Eli Wahlman in the 3,200 (10:58.2). Jennings also took the 4×800 (9:36.9) and 4×100 (48.3) relays).
Liz Wahlman won the 1,600 (5:53) and 800 (2:38) to lead the Panther girls. Jennings also won the 4×400 relay (4:55.
