Local law enforcement commemorates National Police Week

COLUMBUS, Ind. — In commemoration of National Police Week, a memorial service to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty was held this morning at the Public Safety Plaza near Second Street and Jackson Street.

During the 30-minute ceremony, officers read the names of the 362 police officers and 22 police canines who died in the line of duty during 2020, including K9 Diesel from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.

This year’s event featured area law enforcement Honor Guards, bagpipers, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”
