Edwards to direct title services for BCSC

Bartholomew Consolidated School Board members have named a Columbus East High School assistant principal as the new director of title services, a cabinet-level role.

Board members approved the appointment of Charles Edwards, East assistant principal, to director of title services.

Edwards will fill an “extremely important position,” said Superintendent Jim Roberts.

The school corporation’s Title 1 Program provides services and resources to eligible students, educators and families to help foster “educational excellence.”

Title 1 is a federal education program that provides financial assistance to schools with high percentages of low-income families to help ensure that all students meet academic benchmarks.

Gina Pleak, the previous title services director, is moving into the role of assistant superintendent of human resources. The latter position, which is also part of the school cabinet, was previously held by Teresa Heiny, who is retiring.

During the meeting, board members commended retirees, including Heiny, for their service.

“Thank you, Ms. Heiny for all the work you’ve done over the years,” said Board Member Julie Bilz. “We really appreciate it.”

In addition, school officials also welcomed Edwards to the title services position.

“With all the work that we have to do, we’re doing a lot of strategic planning work,” Roberts said. “… When we look at the future and we’re doing the moonshot stuff and we say, ‘Alright, here’s our moonshot.’ Well, 10 years from now, we land on the moon, and then we have a ‘remember when’ moment. We look back. And I’m thinking the ‘remember when’ may have been the night we hired Charles.”

Edwards said that he’s excited about his new role and how it will enable him to work with many programs that need funding “to be able to do great things for kids.”

“It’s just one of those opportunities that I couldn’t pass up,” he said.
