Columbus North will have to wait until Thursday to open defense of its girls tennis sectional title.
The fourth-ranked Bull Dogs have won six consecutive sectional titles and will be a heavy favorite in this week’s North Sectional. They drew a first-round bye in Monday night’s draw for the five-team bracket.
The sectional opens on Wednesday with Hauser (8-6) facing Edinburgh (5-9) at 4:30 p.m. The Jets edged the Lancers 3-2 earlier in the season.
North (14-2) will face Brown County (7-8), and Columbus East (3-14) will take on the Hauser-Edinburgh winner in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The championship match will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The winner of the Columbus North regional advances to the Bloomington South Regional, where it would meet the winner of the Bloomington North Sectional in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. May 25. The regional final is at 5:30 p.m. May 26.
Winners from the Jennings County Sectional and Seymour Sectional will play in the other semifinal May 25 at Bloomington South. Jennings drew a first-round bye and will play Shawe Memorial in the semifinals of the Jennings Sectional. Trinity Lutheran also received a bye and will meet Brownstown Central in the semifinals of the Seymour Sectional.
Columbus North has won four consecutive regional titles. The Bull Dogs reached the state tournament in two of those years, including in 2019, the most recent time the tournament was contested.
The winner of the Bloomington South Regional advances to the Jasper Semistate, where it would play the winner of the Evansville Bosse Regional at noon May 29. The winner of that moves onto the state quarterfinals at noon June 4 at Carmel against the winner from the LaPorte 2 Semistate.
The state semifinals and final are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. June 5 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
