Hope announces Memorial Day services

HOPE – The memory of deceased veterans at eight different locations in eastern Bartholomew County will be honored on Memorial Day. 

Members of the American Legion Post 229 in Hope will be joined by family, friends and a contingent of young scouts on Monday, May 31. 

Full service ceremonies will be conducted at the following times and locations:

  • 8:30 a.m. – Sharon Cemetery
  • 8:50 a.m. – Newburn Cemetery
  • 9:15 a.m. – Hartsville Town Square
  • 9:40 a.m. – Hawcreek Church Cemetery
  • 10:00 a.m. – Simmons Cemetery
  • 10:15 a.m. – Old St Louis Cemetery
  • 10:30 a.m. – Hawcreek Bridge (This stop at the west Jackson Street entrance recognizes those who lost their lives at sea).
  • 11:00 a.m. – Hope Moravian Cemetery Veterans Memorial

Dedicated in 2000, the Hope Moravian Cemetery Veterans Memorial consists of large black granite slabs containing the names of 559 deceased veterans from the northeast Bartholomew County area. 

New names are added annually, with 16 names to be placed this year.

The public is invited to attend any of these services, organizers said.
