COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic’s annual SALUTE! outdoor concert is on at 7 p.m. today at the Bartholomew County Memorial For Veterans at Second and Jackson streets downtown.

The free event will go on even in the rain, and would be canceled only in the case of lightning, according to organizers. They are monitoring weather radar all day.

Orchestra leaders have said they are limiting the crowd to 1,000 people divided into four color-coded, socially-distanced sections. They ask that people not set up chairs or blankets in those sections until 5 p.m. Those allowed on the premises will receive a colored wristband matching their 250-seat section.

They also ask that people don masks when stepping away from their attending group.

The concert was moved to the original Commons its first year in 2001 because of rain. But an estimated 1,000 people still attended. There is no rain location now.

Last year’s concert was canceled because of COVID-19 restrictions.
