Memorial Day ceremonies are planned Monday

Staff Reports

Services are planned in Columbus on Memorial Day on Monday. They include:

9 a.m. — Tossing of rose petals into East Fork White River from the Robert N. Stewart Bridge. This ceremony honors all military personnel who died in naval engagements.

10 a.m. — Ceremony at the veteran’s section of Garland Brook Cemetery. This ceremony is designed to be more religious in substance that other local observances. With more than 3,000 veterans buried in Columbus’ largest cemetery, this ceremony has been held annually since 1972.

11 a.m. — Community Memorial Day observance at the Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans, southwest of the county courthouse. Since the names of all veterans who have died since Nov. 11, 2019 will be read during a balloon release, the program is expected to last a full hour. Those in attendance are urged to bring their own lawn chairs, as well as wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

Members of the American Legion Post 229 in Hope will be joined by family, friends and a contingent of young scouts on Monday, for Memorial Day services.

Full service ceremonies will be conducted at the following times and locations:

8:30 a.m. — Sharon Cemetery

8:50 a.m. — Newburn Cemetery

9:15 a.m. — Hartsville Town Square

9:40 a.m. — Hawcreek Church Cemetery

10 a.m. — Simmons Cemetery

10:15 a.m. — Old St Louis Cemetery

10:30 a.m. — Hawcreek Bridge (This stop at the west Jackson Street entrance recognizes those who lost their lives at sea).

11 a.m. — Hope Moravian Cemetery Veterans Memorial

Dedicated in 2000, the Hope Moravian Cemetery Veterans Memorial consists of large black granite slabs containing the names of 559 deceased veterans from the northeast Bartholomew County area. New names are added annually, with 16 names to be placed this year.
