Memorial Day services held in Hope

HOPE — Locals gathered to remember those who have given their lives while serving their country during a Memorial Day ceremony at the Hope Moravian Cemetery Veterans Memorial on Monday.

Members of American Legion Post 229 in Hope were joined by family, friends and a contingent of young scouts.

Dedicated in 2000, the Hope Moravian Cemetery Veterans Memorial consists of large black granite slabs containing the names of more than 550 deceased veterans from the northeast Bartholomew County area.

Sixteen new names were added to the memorial this year: WM Lucas Lincoln, Robert Lee Spurgin, Robert L. Neff, Ronald E. Trotter, Harold D. Holcomb, Charles H. Pate, Morris D. Nading, Garry L. Estes, David W. Mobley, Michael T. Summers, James T. Mee, Gary L. McLellan, Steven W. Miller, Oliver WM Cowan, Denny Cottongim, and Thomas A. Woodhouse Jr.

Ceremonies were also held at Sharon, Newburn, Hawcreek, Simmons, and Old St Louis cemeteries as well as at the Hartsville Town Square and Hawcreek Bridge.
