Dr. William “Bill” L. Pearce, M.D.

COLUMBUS

Bill (AKA Bronco Billy, Uncle Bull, Kindly Ol’ Doctor Pearce) passed away on May 30, 2021. He’s survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy; daughter, Jody; son, Andrew; brother, Jim; sister-in-law, Pat and nephew, Matt. He was preceded in death by his son, Tom, and nephew, Brian.

As a co-founder of OB/GYN associates, Bill delivered countless babies and bad jokes to captive audiences (patients) from 1970 to 1987. Patients often went out of their way to say how much they appreciated his humor and warmth as a doctor and caregiver. Even after dementia had taken much of his memory, Bill would light up when a former patient would poke their head into his room and remember him as their doctor.

He was valedictorian of his high school class, graduated summa cum laude from Albion College, where he met Judy while flirting across their lab table in Zoology class. He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan. Maybe even more than his scholastic and professional achievements, though, Bill will be remembered for his irreverent, eccentric, frequently gleefully offensive sense of humor. Not to mention his white socks.

As a member of The Mountain Pigs volleyball team, Bill once sacrificed his Achilles tendon in pursuit of victory. Not long after that, the Mountain Pigs gathered less often on the court and more often in boats on the lakes of Kentucky. Every year, the Mountain Pigs would reunite for a rowdy lake party / waterborne mid-life crisis that became legendary for thankfully undocumented moments of misbehavior.

Bill was not so much a “foodie” as a junk foodie and connoisseur of snacks. He had a semi-dormant aspiration to live a life like rugged frontiersman Jeremiah Johnson. After retiring, Bill became an aspiring novelist who spent years wrangling wordplay about the adventures of Brother Wayne.

If you ever met him, he probably tried to make you laugh, and chances are, that is how he’d like you to remember him.
