‘Expect the unexpected’: Indiana artisan show featured at Columbus Learning Center

Staff Reports

Who better to describe the varied and eclectic 100-plus piece lineup at the “Indiana Artisan IN Columbus” exhibit than a Columbus-based Indiana artisan?

Artist and exhibit co-chair Marilyn Brackney can offer an overview of the free show that runs through Aug. 15 at the Columbus Learning Center, 4522 Central Ave.

“Expect the unexpected,” said Brackney, who creates collages from her original marbled papers. “Paintings by Indiana’s contemporary masters…displayed alongside whimsical and funky pieces. Look for clay sculptures that bemuse and amuse, glass that dazzles and awes, and new interpretations of traditional art in many media.”

The exhibit, which is part of the Columbus Area Bicentennial Celebration, showcases the work of some of the state’s more accomplished creators. Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. The building is closed on weekends.

“I think people are very impressed,” Brackney said of the attendance so far for the exhibition.

Look no further than online comments about Brown County artist Michele Pollock’s newest hand-embroidered, three-dimensional photograph, “Moss VIII,” for proof. The work, which goes for $300, started with a photograph and then Pollock added hand embroidery.

“The detail in your embroidery is simply amazing,” said Sandy Graham.

The summer-long exhibit gives collectors an opportunity to purchase top-quality, Indiana-made work. Admission is free. Complimentary parking is available in front of the learning center.

All pieces in the exhibit are for sale.

“The past year made every art enthusiast yearn to engage with outstanding work,” said Daren Redman, a Nashville-based Indiana Artisan who handcrafts art quilts and co-chairs the art show.

Founded more than a decade ago, the artisan organization identifies and recognizes the best in Indiana’s craftsmen and women. Currently, the work of 213 creatives from 56 Indiana counties holds the honor.

Works by artists from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River make up the exhibit. Paintings by Indiana’s contemporary masters are displayed alongside more lighthearted pieces, and new interpretations of traditional art in many media that include stoneware, fiber art, woodworking and more.
