Bicentennial art show open at The Workshop

The exhibition "Making: 200 Years" has opened at The Workshop, 4389 North Long Road in Columbus.

In celebration of the current Columbus Area Bicentennial, the Columbus Area Arts Council organized this juried group exhibition highlighting a diverse group of artists who live or work in Columbus/Bartholomew County, or who have significant ties to the area.

The exhibition includes 39 artworks by 27 artists: paintings, sculpture, photography and more.

"Making: 200 Years" will be on view until Sept. 21. All work is available to view and purchase online at artsincolumbus.square.site.

The Workshop is hosting “Tour Tuesdays” from 4:30 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. These afternoon events are small, informal opportunities to see the work. More information on this is at columbusworkshop.com/art. Regular weekday hours at The Workshop are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A larger public exhibition reception is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14. Light bites and drinks will be served.

"Making: 200 Years" was juried by Dan Mason, owner of Mason-Nordgauer Fine Arts and former assistant director of Historic New Harmony.

"I’m such a fan of Columbus, Indiana, and the outstanding design heritage and residents," Mason said. "As an art dealer, artist and history fan, great artists and even better art is my life and I’m honored to be asked to serve as a juror.

When judging this show virtually — and in the absence of knowing more about your philosophies as artists — I focused on three primary areas: emotion, imagination and skill.

"The thoughtful balance of imagination with technical skill to express a conceptual idea or feeling, are the elements that effectively/energetically connect your work with the public… The basic definition of successful artwork."

As part of a new pop-up project, the arts council is organizing three exhibitions in 2021 at The Workshop, a co-working space in Columbus. This partnership was created to showcase the work of local artists and expand opportunities to experience the arts in our city.

"Making: 200 Years" is the second exhibition of this collaboration. The first exhibition included work by Laurie Wright, and the third will be announced later in the year.
