Staff Reports

A Columbus Police Department school resource officer was recently recognized for his hard work as a SRO at Indiana School Resource Officer Association’s annual conference in Michigan City, Indiana.

Officer Eric Kapczynski, a 19-year police department veteran, received the Exceptional Service Award for Region 9, which covers a large area including Columbus and Bartholomew County.

Kapczynski began his work as a SRO in August of 2018 and is currently assigned to Northside Middle School.

“During his time as a SRO, Officer Kapczynski has worked diligently on building trust and relationships with students, staff and teachers alike,” SRO Sgt. Julie Quesenbery said. “I have personally received several accounts of ‘Officer Kap’ having lunch with students that were otherwise alone or were having a rough day. In addition to being aware to the comings and goings at Northside,

“He continues to teach DARE and finds himself in the classroom whenever opportunity arises. Another big project that Officer Kapczynski tasked himself with was completely revamping the mapping systems for all 18 of our BCSC schools.”

BCSC Superintendent Dr. Jim Roberts, added “Every day, officer Kapczynski and his fellow SRO colleagues are working to form positive relationships with our students while ensuring the safety and security of the nearly 13,500 individuals we have in our 21 buildings. We are proud of Officer Kapczynski for his deserving receipt of this recognition.”
