Staff Reports

Columbus police officers arrested a local man on a felony theft charge Thursday after he was reportedly observed stealing a package from the porch of a Columbus home.

On Wednesday, CPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of North Gladstone Avenue in regards to a theft that had already occurred, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. When officers arrived at the residence, they reviewed home security camera footage of the theft and immediately identified the suspect as David A. Compton, 23, of 203 Hege Ave.

Officers from CPD’s Intelligence Led Policing Unit observed Compton on Thursday evening standing outside of a Columbus residence where he was taken into custody, Harris said. Compton was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded on a preliminary charge of theft with a previous conviction (Level 6 felony).

Compton was being held in jail in lieu of $7,500 bond, jail officials said.
