A Columbus police officer shot an aggressive dog, after the officer was bit in the leg by the animal during an investigation on Thursday morning.

At approximately 10 a.m., a CPD officer was stopped by a third party in regards to young juveniles riding a motorcycle in the 2700 block of Hawcreek Avenue. The officer located the juveniles a short time later and responded to their residence to speak to a parent, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Moments later, when the parent opened the door to the residence, a Pointer-breed dog exited the home and aggressively charged at the officer who was standing outside the house, Harris said. The officer kicked at the dog repeatedly in an effort to scare the animal away, however, the dog bit the CPD officer in the leg, Harris said.

The officer fired one round striking the dog, causing the animal to run a short distance away. Moments later, the dog charged at the officer again causing the officer to fire his duty weapon a second time, Harris said.

Columbus Animal Care Services was requested and responded to residence. The wounded dog was taken to local veterinarian for treatment and did survive, police said.

The officer received treatment for the dog bite and was later discharged from a local medical facility, Harris said.

Animal Care Services Director Nicohl Birdwell Goodin declined to comment on the agency’s role in the case or to provide documentation about an alleged previous biting incident involving the dog and a delivery driver, saying she could not provide it unless The Republic filled out a written public information request to get that information.
