Foul play not suspected in man’s death

Staff Reports

The Bartholomew County Coroner’s office is continuing an investigation into the death of a man who was found near Haw Creek off the People Trail in the area of Marr Road and Rock Ford Road.

Bartholomew County Deputy Coroner Jay Frederick said foul play is not suspected in the death, and an investigation is continuing.

The 26-year-old male was found near the creek by two men who were swimming in Haw Creek at about noon Wednesday and noticed the man on the bank, said Tanis Copeland, one of the men who called police.

Copeland said he and a friend were swimming around in the creek near the dam, where they spotted the man’s body on the bank, not in the water, but close to the dam on the bank.

Copeland said he swam over to investigate after his friend said there was a “guy over there” on the bank, but discovered the man was dead and the two immediately went back to their car and called 911.

The man, who was fully clothed, had a gun holster but the two did not get any closer before immediately going to call authorities, Copeland said. “We did not get close enough to see if there was a gun,” he said.

The coroner’s office estimated the body had been on the bank less than 24 hours when it was discovered.

Investigators are not ready to release the identity of the individual yet, but wanted to notify the community that the death is not considered to be the result of foul play.
