About 250 volunteers fanned out across the county to paint, weed, mow, and build ramps for United Way of Bartholomew County’s annual Day of Service on Sept. 10.

The nonprofit, social service outreach matches volunteers from the community with needed projects in Bartholomew County for residents, partner agencies and community entities.

Volunteers put in about 1,000 hours of labor at 20 sites. Employees from eight companies participated.

Day of Service helps connect volunteers to projects that partner agencies and community partners don’t have the time to do throughout the year, said Alicia Monroe, Volunteer Action Center director.

Examples of projects include sorting donations at Sans Souci, painting at Turning Point, helping with home repairs, and landscaping at Thrive Alliance and organizing and sorting at Love Chapel.

“Agencies don’t typically have the capacity to complete the projects done for Day of Service or Day of Caring. Volunteers play an integral role in helping to ensure the agency’s most important projects get completed,” Monroe said.

The Faurecia Foundation made it possible to build an accessibility ramp at a client’s home.
