Emmett Smith

NASHVILLE

Emmett Smith, 25, of Nashville, IN, passed away September 4, 2021, from a heroin overdose. He was born November 22, 1995, and spent a big portion of his life struggling with addiction. Unfortunately, he became another number in the opioid epidemic. He is not only a statistic: he harnessed a lively personality to be reckoned with. He was a charismatic jokester who radiated loyalty and honesty to those he befriended and loved. Emmett enjoyed fishing with his friends, being a good ol’ Brown County guy, playing video games and Bingo, as well as doing geeky computer things.

When Emmett became a father to Steven, he knew it was time to get serious about his sobriety. But as time went on, his addiction overtook him?something that even the strongest of people cannot control. His love for Steven was impeccable.

We share his story in hope of shining a light into the dark world of addiction while humanizing his reality. Words cannot describe how dearly Emmett will be missed.

Emmett was preceded in death by his loving caretaker and granny, Mary Anne “Cookie” Smith, and her husband Steve Smith, as well as his great grandfather Robert “Bob” Hedrick.

Emmett is survived by both of his parents, Kate Golt and Clay Smith; stepmother, Darlene Soots; son, Steven Smith; mother of his son, Natasha Hand; great grandmother, Maxine Hedrick; loving mammaw Kathi Smith and papaw Steven Smith; grandmaw, Nancy Yates; great aunt, Alice Hedrick; great uncle, Dick Hedrick; aunts, Emily Austin and Ann Crozier; uncle, Darrin Smith; siblings, Nolan Golt and Skyler Busby; cousins, Molly and Will Austin, who were more like siblings growing up, as well as cousins Adam and Madeline Crozier; outstanding family friend, Jeff Lambert; and best friends, Jack E. Harden, Ethan Lutes, Logan Petro, and Paul Marano.

A Celebration of Life event will be announced at a later time. Until then, as Emmett always said, “Be good, or be good at it.”
