Lee Enkoff hadn’t played in a competitive golf tournament since he was at Northside Middle School.
But Saturday and Sunday, the former Columbus East basketball player but his golf skills to good use. He carded rounds of 64 and 65 to win the city Par 3 Tournament at Par 3 Golf Course.
“I left some (shots) out there on the course for sure,” Enkoff said. “I played a little better today. I definitely think I could have done a little bit better, but overall, I’m pretty proud of it.”
Enkoff won by seven shots over runner-up Brian Jones (67-69), who had a 136. Ethan Crough, who organized the tournament, fired the best round of the day on Sunday with a 60 to finish third at 140. Justin Montgomery (76-81) was fourth with a 167.
Meanwhile, the tournament’s best overall score went to Senior Division winner Brent Church (63-65), who finished with a 128. He trailed Eric Hahn by a shot going into the final round, but Hahn withdrew after nine holes on Sunday. Johnny Montgomery (70-73) finished second with a 143.
“For the weather, I think with the wind and the rain, I think we both pretty good,” Church said. “This morning, I thought we were going to have a thunderstorm, but the rain held off.”
The closest battle came in the Junior Division, where brothers Conrad and John Eggers squared off. John, an eighth-grader, led by three shots after the first round, but Conrad caught him on the back nine and held on to win by one shot after both players bogeyed their last hole, No. 9.
Conrad, a junior football player at East, had rounds of 78 and 81 for a 159. John (75-85) finished with a 160.
“I just came out and tried to focus and get it done,” Conrad said. “It was pretty exciting. I’m glad to come out and win.”
