Staff Reports

A theft suspect was arrested Tuesday morning by CPD officers after he was observed carrying stolen property on 25th Street.

Shortly after 9 a.m., CPD officers responded to the 2400 block of Charleston Place in regards to a report of theft from a vehicle. Officers had also responded to separate reports of thefts from vehicles in the area, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

A short time later, one of the theft victims reported seeing a man, later identified as James J. Burns III, 23, of 31 S. Ross St., carrying the victim’s stolen property. The officers located Burns in the 3400 block of 25th Street where he was placed under arrest, Harris said.

The officers recovered the stolen property and also located a bag containing stolen property from a separate theft from a vehicle.

Burns was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded to their custody on preliminary charges of Theft from a Motor Vehicle.

The Columbus Police Department would like to remind the public that they help local law enforcement reduce property crime in Columbus by removing valuable items from their vehicles and ensuring that their vehicles are locked and secure when they are not being used.

Burns was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $62,500 bond, jail officials said.
