COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Columbus defendant who admits trying to murder a professional ice skater and instructor last fall has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Ryan T. Halligan, 30, accepted a plea agreement on Oct. 25th regarding his brutal attack against Emaly “Emma” Baxter outside of the Hamilton Center Ice Arena on Oct. 23, 2020.

Under the plea agreement in Bartholomew Superior Court 1, Halligan agrees to plead guilty to attempted murder as a Level 1 felony, as well as accept a habitual offender enhancement.

He received 35 years in prison for the attempted murder conviction and an additional 15 years for the habitual offender enhancement.

In return, Bartholomew County Prosecutor Bill Nash agreed to drop all other charges in the Baxter case, as well as a separate matter where Halligan was accused of violently victimizing a female relative.

Halligan said during the court hearing he plans to appeal the sentence.
