Hunter Johnson // South Decatur senior basketball player

Johnson led the Cougars with a career-high 42 points and 10 rebounds in a 79-71 season-opening loss at Trinity Lutheran and matched it with 42 points in Friday’s 82-54 win against Switzerland County. He was named the IBCA District 3 Boys Player of the Week.

His performance last week: “I feel it went well. I shot the ball well and was able to help the team get points.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I go in every morning at 6 a.m. and shoot in the morning. Then after school, I’ll get a workout in.”

Favorite drink: “Gatordade”

Favorite food: “Steak”

Favorite class: “Guidance aide”

Favorite sports team: “Indiana University and Golden State Warriors”

Favorite athlete: “Michael Jordan”

Role model: “My parents (Walt and Debbie Johnson)”

Best advice: “Work every time you get a chance. Always get better at your game or your craft, and when you go in to work out, don’t waste time in the gym, and don’t waste opportunities to benefit yourself and others.”

Athletics goal: “Go as far as I can possibly go in basketball.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Bora Bora. It looks like a cool place to go.”

Saige Stahl // Columbus East junior basketball player

Stahl led the Olympians with 20 points, seven rebounds an four steals in a 71-50 win at Brownstown Central and with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals in Saturday’s 62-51 win against Mooresville. She was named the IBCA District 3 Girls Player of the Week.

Her performance last week: “It was a team effort, and we all played really well together. We worked the ball around, and we got a lot of momentum and we just have to keep that going.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “Usually, I listen to some music, and every time before a game, I say a prayer in the locker room.”

Favorite drink: “Sprite”

Favorite food: “Steak”

Favorite class: “English”

Favorite sports team: “Indiana University”

Favorite athlete: “(Kentucky volleyball player) Alli Stumler”

Role model: “My mom (Misty Poole)”

Best advice: “Don’t let anyone say anything to put you down, but rather take it for momemtum and keep pushing toward your goal.”

Athletics goal: “To make it to state for basketball.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Paris, because I would love to visit the sites and to eat the food.”
