Columbus students nominated to service academies

    Rep. Greg Pence last week announced military service academy recommendations for high school students in the Columbus-based congressman’s Sixth District of Indiana.

    Following interviews by members of the the Sixth Congressional District’s Service Academy Advisory Board, Pence recommended 13 nominees — including five from Columbus — to the Military Academy at West Point, New York, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.

    The local nominees are:

    • West Point: Trinity Lutheran High School student Conner J. Sims of Columbus.
    • Naval Academy: Columbus North students William K. Kiel and Matthew Newell.
    • Air Force Academy: Culver Military Academy student Richard W. Kang of Columbus, Columbus North student William K. Kiel and Columbus North student Zachary N. Wager.
    • Merchant Marine Academy: Columbus North student Matthew Newell.

    “Every year, my office has the honor of nominating the best and brightest students of Indiana’s Sixth District to the various service academies. These students are committing to serve our country, and I am proud to recommend these thirteen young men and women,” Pence said. “I appreciate the time and thoughtful consideration of the Service Academy Advisory Board throughout this process.
