Columbus police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 on Tuesday night.

At approximately 11:20 p.m., CPD officers responded to I-65 southbound near the 67 mile marker in regards to a one-vehicle crash, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When officers arrived, they saw that a semi-tractor and trailer carrying steel tubing had left the southbound lanes and crashed, Harris said. The driver of the semi, James McGoff, 51, of Louisville, Kentucky, died at the scene of the crash, investigators said.

The Bartholomew County Coroner’s office said McGoff died from massive trauma in the accident.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 65 were closed for several hours overnight while the crash was investigated. Accident reconstructionists are continuing to investigate, Harris said.

Columbus police and Indiana State Police closed the southbound lanes of I-65 for about six hours Wednesday night beginning at 10 p.m. to clean up the steel debris from the accident, rerouting traffic to State Road 46 in Columbus.
