Flames Bantam B hockey team wins Great Lakes Winter Classic

Columbus Flames Bantam B won its division in last weekend’s Great Lakes Winter Classic. Columbus Flames Bantam B won the Great Lakes Winter Classic last weekend. The team beat Crystal Lake Yellowjackets 4-2 and Lansing Senators 5-3 and fell to Elmhurst Chiefs 5-3 before beating Elmhurst Chiefs 2-1 in the championship. Bryce McDonald scored four goals, Ashton Nguyen netted three goals and one assist, Blake Avery scored three goals, Sawyer Patterson had two goals and five assists, Philip Mattern and Leah Doig each added one goal and one assist, Griffin Mudd had three assists and Jonah Young and Tyler Hubler each added one assist. Lane Barringer was in net all weekend.

Columbus Flames Squirt B finished second in the Great Lakes Winter Classic, falling to Grand Rapid Blades 7-2, tying Novi Pumas 1-1 and beating the Rolling Meadows Renegades 3-1 before falling to Grand Rapids Blades 5-0 in the championship. Thomas Degner scored two goals, Carson Sims and Declan McGurk each had one goal and one assist, Ollie Jamerson and Lucas Oswald each scored one goal and Clare Neff and Carter Zortman each added one assist,. Knox Coen was in net.

The Columbus Icemen lost to South Stars Red 4-0 and blanked Carmel Blue 7-0. John Ferguson scored three goals, Alex Clark netted one goal and three assists, Caleb McGhehey had one goal and two assists, Nate Balasia and Will Kushner each scored one goal, Cadan Graham and Barrett Mudd each had two assists and Kaitlyn Buickel added one assist. Jake McMullen and Benjamin Blaz were in net one game each.

Columbus Flames Bantam A beat Junior Fuel Black 4-2 and 2-1. Westin Davis netted three goals and three assists; River Degner had two goals and one assist; Kaitlyn Netser scored one goal and Carson King, Will Jamerson and Leif Nelson all added one assist.

Columbus Flames Peewee A fell to Cincinnati Jr Cyclones 14-1 and 7-1 and Columbus Comets 5-1 and 4-2. Tsukasa Udo and Brooks Larsh each scored two goals; Simon Barnes added one goal; Rowan Correll had three assists; Ryan McGhehey added two assists and Ethan Neumann, Kai Bergmann and Zane Lynch all had one assist. Canyon Long was in net for the weekend.

Columbus Flames Peewee B played in the Great Lakes Winter Classic, beating Troy Sting 3-1, falling to Bowie Bruins 5-2 and St Louis Rockets 4-0 and Troy Sting 2-0. Ayden Richardson scored two goals; Preston Bell, Cooper Ross and John Tuttle all added one goal and Bryson Moore and Garrett Uy each had one assist. Gabe Marsh was in net all weekend.

Columbus Flames Squirt A played the Columbus Capitals AA and tied 4-4 and won 4-2 and tied the Indy Junior Fuel Gold 2-2 twice. Bentley Hampton netted three goals and two assists; Carter Harris had three goals and one assist; Thomas King scored two goals; Logan Barringer had one goal and three assists; Max Perez added one goal and two assists; Dalton Larsh had one goal and one assist, Luke Getchell scored one goal; Maddox Coy had two assists and Hiromu Udo, Daniel Wallaceand Keaton Grube all added one assist. Cayden Long was in net and saved 76 of 86 goals for 88%.

SWIMMING

Club Olympia competes

Club Olympia finished sixth out of 22 of the Midwest’s top swim clubs last weekend when nearly 1,000 swimmers from Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri competed in the Fishers Aquatics Club Santa Claus Championships.

Club Olympia’s distance team had two wins and six top-five finishes among the 10 athletes competing in the 1,650-yard event. Their relay group claimed five top-five finishes over the weekend.

Machavariani, placing first in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, second in the 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 50 backstroke and 200 individual medley, and top-five in three other events, claimed the High Point trophy for the Boys 9-10-year-old division. He also swam in and won his first-ever timed mile event (1,650 yards).

Josh Pendleton took the High Point Award in the 11-12 boys division on the strength of first-place finishes in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle and seconds in the 50 freestyle,100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100butterfly, with a third in the timed mile event.

Vivian Shah placed third in high points in the 8U boys division by winning the 25 backstroke and 50 backstroke, taking second in the 100 IM and grabbing top-five finishes in seven other events.

In addition to Shah for the boys, the 8U girls were paced by Emily Meek with five top-10 finishes. Aahan Gupta led the 8U boys with two top-10 finishes. Also competing for Club Olympia in the 8U boys and girls divisions were Cali Gray, Aahana Ingole, Myra Jayal, Bella Zhang, Vincent Chin, Aarush Datar, Sarthak Deshmukh and Teddy Machavariani.

Aashka Shah led the 9-10 girls with seven top-10 finishes. She was joined in the 9-10 girls division by Lily Pendleton and Josie Hudson.

Competing alongside Machavariani in the 9-10 boys division was Shreyan Kulkarni with 10 top-10 finishes. Also competing were Arjun Agarkar, Jonathon Dettmer, Daxton Wolf and Xavier Zhang.

Connelly Furnish led the 11-12 girls division placing first in the mile event, second in the 200 IM, 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, along with four other top-five finishes. Zoie Chandelkar claimed three top 10-finishes. Joining Furnish and Chandelkar were Sanaa Kulkarni, Advika Badve, Nandini Kondhare, Lovely Panda and Saanvi Vibhuti.

Brooklyn Pendleton competed in the 13-14 girls division.

In the open division, Cole Ehara had three top-10 finishe,s including a third in the mile event. Maggie Johnson placed top 10 in two events, including a fourth in the mile event.

Several Club Olympia athletes that are currently competing for their various high school teams were able to complete on a limited schedule over the weekend. Misha Machavariani had three top-five finishes, including a third in the mile event, and Todd Hundley added three top-10 finishes, including a fourth in the mile. Ty Mayer (eighth), Judah Nickoll (10th) and Cavan Stilson (11th) also competed in the mile. Also competing were Dathan Wolf, Ethan Hall and Rylan Perkins. Ashley Freel, Annie Murer, and Hope Westphal all swam preliminary events on the final day and joined Maggie Johnson to claim a fourth-place relay finish.

Donner swims at Seymour

Donner Swim Club competed in the Seymour Winter Invitational, along with seven other teams last weekend.

In the 13-and-over Open Division, Aarush Mahato won the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly. Harshith Devagapattu had top-five finishes in three events, and Isaac Niewedde placed fifth in 100 butterfly. Ainsley Sherlock placed first in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. Nitya Garg had top-five finishes in two events, and Abby Proffitt placed fifth in 200 IM.

In the 11-12 age group, Mridula Muthukumaran won the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 100 butterfly events. Caroline Crawford and Rajvi Sapkal had top-five finishes in three events and Sanchita Ponnathpur placed third in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke. Levi Bense finished fourth in the 100 backstroke.

In the 9-10 age group, Jonathan Callaway had top-five finishes in seven events and won the 100 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke events. Lincoln Crawford finished fourth in the 200 freestyle. Camila Murguia placed first in 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Rebecca Murguia had top-five finishes in all of her events. Alexis Miller had two top- five finishes.

In the 8 and under division, Bryant Babb finished first in the 25 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 25 backstroke and 50 backstroke. Nathaniel Dismore had top-five finishes in three events. Nathan Perfetto placed in the top five in four of the events in which he participated. Millicent Fry raced in nine events and had top-five finishes in all of them.

BROOMBALL

MOR, Hansons remain unbeaten

Monsters of Rock and Hansons remained unbeaten with wins in the Columbus Broomball League last week.

MOR beat CCA 5-1. Ryan Ingalls scored twice, and Ben Eckhart, Zach Henderson and Katelyn Pierera all added one goal for MOR (3-0-1). Shawn Bauman had the goal for CCA (0-3-1).

Hansons topped Toyota Tsunamis 8-1. Rahul Bhardwaj and Ryan Jebson each had two goals, and Max Warr, Cindy Mason, Erik Spilling and Matt Psota all added one for Hansons (3-0-1). Jimmy Robertson scored for Tsunamis (1-3).

Our Name Is Earl blanked Jennings County BC (1-2-1) 7-0. Cesar Hernandez and Darren Eckerly each had two gials, and Nick Lewis, Dani Kareus and Tom Kareus all added one for Earl (2-2).

BASKETBALL

Panther teams win

Jennings County’s eighth-grade White team improved to 7-1 with a 53-37 win against Scottsburg on Thursday. Parker Elmore led the Panthers with 21 points, while Cash Millspaugh scored 15 and Luke Alexander added 12.

The Jennings seventh-grade White squad beat Scottsburg 37-20. Mikey Hall led the Panthers (3-5) with 14 points, and Alijah McKeand added 12.

Jennings’ seventh-grade Blue team beat Southwestern (Hanover) 41-19. Jacob Ferguson scored 17 points, and Eric Valdvinos added 10.

The Panther eighth-grade Blue squad fell to Southwestern (Hanover) 42-31. Omar Gonzalez led the way with 13 points.
