Panther Pantry helps Jennings students, families in need

The Panther Pantry run by teachers Marissa Patterson and Tracey Martin at Jennings County High School assists families who are are in need or struggle financially.

“We offer a wide variety of not just food items, but some hygiene items including fresh food items purchased through a fund set up at the high school which has been provided by private donors,” Patterson said.

Students and families are welcome to come in and shop every third Thursday of every month from 4-6 p.m.

The idea came about from the previous Back Sack program run by Gleaners Food Bank.

Due to respect for students’ privacy, students aren’t allowed to be at the Panther Pantry during distribution time.

Patterson also said, “I do have student groups who volunteer to help stock the pantry when the order comes in, such as our Key Club and Mrs. Norton’s class, who volunteer to do the fresh food shopping, and we really appreciate that.”

Panther Pantry has been in operation for nine years.

Donors can help the panther pantry by donating financially to the Panther Pantry fund, which is used to purchase milk, bread, eggs, cheese and more. For more information, call the high school at 812-346-5588.
