Basketball teams to play in holiday tourneys

It’s the holiday season, and that also means holiday tournament season for several area boys and girls basketball teams.

The Columbus North boys will play in the Noblesville Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday. The Bull Dogs will open with Crown Point at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, then would play the Lawrence Central-Norwell loser at 6 p.m. Tuesday if they lose, or the Lawrence Central-Norwell winner at 11 a.m. Wednesday if they win. The placement-round games are later that afternoon and evening.

Hauser, Edinburgh and South Decatur will play in the Edinburgh Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday. In Tuesday’s openers, the Jets meet Indianapolis Lutheran at 10 a.m., the Cougars face South Putnam at noon and the Lancers play Lanesville at 2 p.m. Winners and losers of the first two games play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and winners and losers of the Edinburgh-Lanesville and North-White-Hagerstown games play at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The placement-round games are at 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The Columbus Christian boys are hosting their own eight-team Holiday Hoops tournament Monday and Tuesday. The Crusaders will play Pleasant View Christian at 2:30 p.m. and Kings Academy at 5:15 p.m. Monday and the Columbus Hawks homeschool team at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Hawks will face Kings Academy at 11:30 a.m. and Pleasant View Christian at 8 p.m. Monday. Placement-round games are at 4, 5:30, 7 and 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Jennings County boys will play North Harrison in the Batesville Invitational at noon Dec. 30. The Panthers will then face Batesville or Waldron at 4 p.m. in the consolation game or 6 p.m. in the championship.

On the girls side, Class A No. 8 Trinity Lutheran will play in Eastern Greene’s Toby Yoho Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Cougars will play Barr-Reeve at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Eastern Green at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Teams then will play a crossover game, followed by a placement-round game on Wednesday.

The Jennings girls will play in the Ben Davis Holiday Classic on Wednesday. The Panthers will face Martinsville at 11:30 a.m. and Avon at 4:30 p.m.

Columbus North’s girls will play a single game in the Jeffersonville Shootout at 3 p.m. Wednesday against Louisville Butler.

North, East girls games postponed

One Columbus East and two Columbus North girls basketball games that were scheduled for this week have been postponed until January.

The Eastern (Pekin) at East game that was scheduled for today has been moved to Jan. 3. The Jennings County at North game that was scheduled for Tuesday has been moved to Jan. 6, and the Carmel at North game that was scheduled for today now will be Jan. 13.

Also, Hauser has rescheduled a pair of girls basketball games that had been postponed. The Jets will host Monrovia Jan. 4 and will travel to Shawe Memorial on Jan. 21.

Speer, Williams make Silver Anniversary team

Two women with local ties have been selected to the 2022 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Silver Anniversary Team.

Jennings County’s Andi Speer and Seymour’s Amber (Holle) Williams were named to the 18-member squad of 1997 graduates. Williams was Trinity Lutheran’s first girls basketball coach from 2002-06.

Kleffman headed to Kentucky Wesleyan

Stella Kleffman, who helped lead Trinity Lutheran to the Class A volleyball state final, has committed to continue her career at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Kleffman, a Columbus resident, led the Cougars with 56 aces and had 149 kills, 18 blocks and 425 digs as a senior this season.
