Kathryn M. Young, age 94, of Columbus, passed away December 25, 2021.

Kathryn (Katie) was born January 3, 1927, in Columbus, the daughter of Roscoe and Hilda (Huston) Wilhite. She married Donald R. Young June 29, 1947, at the First Baptist Church where she was a life-long member.

Katie is survived by her children, Vic (Betsy) Young of Germantown, Tennessee and Nancy (Jim) Gevecker of The Villages, Florida; grandchildren, Kathryn (Jeeshan) Chowdhury of San Francisco, California, Scott (Brittany) Deemer of Mesa, Arizona, Ashley (Nathan) Weber of Troy, Missouri, and Justin Gevecker of St. Louis, Missouri; and great-grandchildren, Lucas Deemer, Kinsley Weber, and Kali Weber.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald on May 31, 2003; as well as her siblings, Charles Wilhite, Jack Wilhite and Bill Wilhite.

Katie was a proud resident of Columbus for over 85 years. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1945 and attended IUPUI. Katie was active in the Columbus community; she retired in 1992 as an administrative assistant from Cummins Engine Company where she worked for 38 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Red Hat Society, and one of the original Columbus East High School athletic parent boosters while Vic and Nancy were student-athletes.

Katie was bright and beloved, known for her energy, easy laugh, and love for her family. She will be missed by many.

The funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Barkes Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Dr. Daniel Cash will officiate.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 12 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Katie will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Garland Brook Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Columbus Firemen’s Cheer Fund.
