COLUMBUS, Ind. — State health officials reported a record-breaking 170 new coronavirus cases in Bartholomew County on Wednesday the highest ever in the county according to updated figures released by the Indiana Department of Health. It was the second consecutive day a record for daily cases was set, after Tuesday’s number was reported at 138 infections.

About 54% of the cases were in local residents ages 40 and older, including 34 among residents ages 60 and older, state records show. Just 13% were in children.

The previous record was 126 cases on Dec. 2, 2020.

Bartholomew County also recorded four new COVID-19 deaths, including two on New Year’s Day, raising the total to 205 lives lost over the course of the pandemic.

The record number of cases comes as COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations in Indiana reach their highest levels in over a year.

On Tuesday, there were 3,260 people in Indiana hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 3,071 this past Saturday.

CRH reported 51 coronavirus hospitalizations on Monday, just eight fewer than the all-time record 59 set on Dec. 2, 2020.
