North swimmers fall to Cougars

The Columbus North swimmers put in a big week of training over the past week, but still managed to put together some personal-best times in Thursday’s dual meet with Bloomington North.

Unfortunately for the Bull Frogs, they weren’t able to come away with a victory. The Cougars won the boys meet 105-81 and the girls meet 131-55.

“This was our hardest week of training,” North coach Brett Findley said. “This was the week that we really pushed it the most, so I was really pleased with their effort tonight. We knew Bloomington North was going to be a really good team, but we went out and raced them.”

The Bull Frogs won five boys events. David Fry took the 50-yard freestyle (22.79 seconds) and 100 butterfly (56.29), and Daniel Utterback captured the 100 freestyle (50.61) and 100 backstroke (59.57). Cole Wheeler won the diving competition (212.25).

The North girls won one event. Brooke Meek, Karissa Bevis, Kara Buntin and Lauren Brault took the 200 freestyle relay (1:54.13).

“Paige Maddox and Lauren Brault had really good 500 swims,” Findley said. “Our (individual medley swimmers) were right at their best times. Considering what we did this week training-wise and to still do that, we were very pleased.”

The Bull Frogs will have to compete against Bloomington North again Jan. 22 in the Conference Indiana meet at Terre Haute South and Feb. 3 and 5 in the Columbus North Sectional.

“We’re going to see them again,” Findley said. “We swam a couple different events tonight, and we have a little bit of time before we get going.”
