Letter: Just the facts about Jan. 6 — time has come to wake up

We are living in a time when many feel that truth is just what you believe to be true. A time that there are facts and alternative facts. That words and definitions have no real meaning but can be used however one feels.

But there is a real world out there. A world where there are truths and facts and fantasy and bullcrap. One that exists independently of what a Facebook feed or Tucker Carlson or Sydney Powell says. In the real world, up is still up and down is still, and always will be, down, no matter where you get your news.

These are facts:

Joe Biden won the presidential election. There was no significant voter fraud. This comes from then-Attorney General Bill Barr, who President Trump appointed. It comes from the Department of Homeland Security: “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised,” it was “the most secure in history.” It comes from the numerous recounts in Georgia, Arizona and elsewhere. It comes from the court battles where judges, some appointed by Trump, threw all of the cases out. In the real world, Joe Biden won and Donald Trump lost. It doesn’t matter if you choose to believe this or not. This is a fact in the real world.

Speaking of Sydney Powell, her defense in the lawsuit brought against her by Dominion Voting Systems is that “No reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact.” Are you a reasonable person?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a patriot as one who loves and supports his or her country. On January 6, 2021, domestic terrorists tried to overturn the results of a free and fair election. That’s a fact. Most, I suspect, consider themselves to be patriots. They were not and are not patriots. To attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election is sedition at best. To do it using violence is terrorism by definition. Real world: These are not patriots; they are domestic terrorists trying to overthrow our democracy. If you support them, you are a collaborator. There were collaborators in France during World War II. It shamefully happens. But history tends to have a brutally harsh and usually accurate rearview mirror. That day of reckoning will come here too.

Another fact: If you throw a fire extinguisher at, bear spray or beat a law enforcement officer with a flagpole, you are not pro-law enforcement. Don’t ever say you are. You are exactly the opposite. If you support those who do, again, you’re a collaborator.

I’m a veteran, a Republican, a patriot, and I am scared to death for our democracy. The one I swore to defend. I hope that real patriots and real Republicans will wake up and take this seriously.
