Mary Gommel

Mary A. Gommel, 90, passed away on Saturday morning, January 15, 2022 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

She was born on July 2, 1931 in Cannan, IN, the daughter of Hanley and Laura (Ralston) Konkle and graduated in 1949 from Central High School in Jefferson County. On June 11, 1961 in Canaan, she married Jackie D. “Jack” Gommel, Sr.

She co-owned and operated Gommel’s Meat Market with her husband Jack for 30 years until her retirement in 1997; was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She loved spending time with family, children and grandchildren. Surviving are two sons, Timothy R. Gommel (wife, Vickie) of Yorktown and Brian A. Gommel (wife, Melissa) of Muncie; six grandchildren, Jamie Tapley (husband, Jon), Chasity Evans (husband, Adam), Craig Gommel (wife, April), Amy Gommel (Bob Jessie), Austin Gommel (wife, Sierra) and Isaac Gommel; thirteen great-grandchildren, Owen, Rylan, Madeline, Gracie, Hayden, Parker, Kaylee, Kinslee, Elijah, Caleb, Draxton, Ayden and Kylah; one brother-in-law, Marvin Finke (wife, Pauline) of Columbus; one sister-in-law, Mary Konkle of Greensburg; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Jackie D. “Jack” Gommel, Sr.; one son, Jackie D. Gommel, Jr.; two brothers, Charles Konkle and Bill Konkle; one sister, Margaret Horine and brother-in-law, Glenford Horine; and one sister-in-law, Marie Konkle.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022 at Garland Brook Cemetery, 501 N. Gladstone Avenue, Columbus, IN.

Family and friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022.
