East moves to final
BLOOMINGTON — Class 4A No. 8 Columbus East advanced to Tuesday’s Bloomington North Sectional final with a 70-48 semifinal win against Martinsville on Saturday.
The Olympians (19-3) jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter and built the margin to 39-21 at halftime.
Leah Bachmann scored 20 points, and Saige Stahl had 18 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals to lead East. Koryn Greiwe added 12 points, and Harley Gant grabbed eight rebounds.
The Olympians will face East Central, a 71-45 winner over Bloomington South in Saturday’s second semifinal, in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
New Albany tops O’s
NEW ALBANY — Columbus East played New Albany to a stalemate over the final three quarters, but couldn’t overcome a 15-7 deficit after one quarter in a 59-51 Hoosier Hills Conference loss.
Julius Dailey led the Olympians (2-13, 0-4) with 16 points. Ben Sylva scored 13, and Will Rieckers added 12.
Crusaders victorious
Columbus Christian built a 31-21 halftime lead and went on to post a 66-53 win against Community Christian.
Gabe Ridder led the Crusaders (16-10) with 25 points. Payton Walden scored 10, and Noah Edwards added nine.
Lancers rout Tigers
EDINBURGH — Class A No. 1 Edinburgh ran out to a 34-10 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 72-32 win against Crothersville.
Caleb Dewey led the Lancers (15-1) with 17 points. Jarrett Turner scored 13, and Braylon Bryant and Travis Jones each added eight.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Panthers in position
FLOYDS KNOBS — Two Jennings County swimmers are in position to qualify for state after achieving the fastest-qualifying times to the finals of the Floyd Central Sectional.
Avery Witt has the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 1.61 seconds), and Tatum Brown is fastest in the 500 freestyle (5:31.58) and second-fastest in the 200 freestyle (2:03.20). The Panthers are third in the 200 medley relay (2:00.70), and Witt is fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:03.45).
The finals will take place on Monday.
