East wrestlers cruise to 6th straight regional title

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus East took 13 wrestlers to Saturday’s Jeffersonville Regional, and all 13 advanced to next week’s Evansville Semistate.

Led by nine champions, the Olympians rolled to their sixth consecutive regional title. They racked up 255 points to 124.5 for runner-up Jeffersonville 77 for third-place Corydon Central and 71 for fourth-place Columbus North.

Liam Krueger (113 pounds), Noah Lykins (120), Nate Anderson (132), Reece Fisher (138), Eli Pollitt (152), Kade Law (160), Jaden Durnil (182), Tommy Morrill (220) and Ashton Hartwell (285) all won their respective weight classes for East. Tristan Statler (170) and Josh Schrader (195) each finished second, and Bo Wagner (126) and Kenton Wilson (145) each placed third.

The top four in each weight class qualified for semistate.

The Bull Dogs were led by freshman Justice Thornton, who won the 126-pound title. Liam Curfman (106) and Jared Slocum II (182) each finished second, and Liam Phillips (152) and Keller DeSpain (170) each took fourth to give North five semistate qualifiers out of the 10 who competed at regional.

Jennings County finished sixth as a team with 41 points. Lane Kirchner (120), Teagan Trotter (170) and Gage Gasper (220) all finished third, and Peyton Hayden (285) was fourth.

The semistate will take place Saturday at Ford Center in Evansville. The top four in each weight class qualify for the Feb. 19-20 state finals.
