The Columbus Fire Department announces the retirement of Lt. Russ Dixon, who joined the department in 1987 and retires after 34 years of service.

Dixon earned several officer promotions throughout his firefighter/paramedic career, including sergeant, lieutenant, captain and battalion chief. Dixon is a state certified paramedic and hazardous material technician. Dixon officially retired Monday, Feb. 7, from his post at Fire Station #6 on Battalion A.

Also Monday, Columbus Fire Chief Andy Lay announced that firefighter Dan Smith has been promoted to Lieutenant. Smith has been with the department for 12 years and has obtained numerous technician level certifications through this career.

Smith’s certifications include paramedic, confined space rescue technician, hazardous materials technician, rope rescue technician, swift water rescue technician and vehicle and machinery rescue technician. Smith is also a state certified fire instructor and fire investigator.

Lieutenant Smith has been assigned to Battalion A at Fire Station #1.
